Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday is one of the holiest days in the Christian religion. It commemorates Jesus rising from the dead on the third day after his crucifixion.

Christians around the world share the belief that Jesus Christ was crucified, died, and was buried, a sacred date which is commemorated as Good Friday or Holy Friday, an important day in Holy Week.

On the third day after his death, we read in the Gospel according to Matthew, chapter 28, women came to the tomb, but found the stone rolled away. An angel told them that Jesus was not there, but had risen as he said he would. Later he was seen alive by several of his disciples or followers.

This miracle is seen as one of the holiest and most revered of the Christian faith,  a joyful celebration of hope, new life, and God’s promises fulfilled. The cross on which he died, and the image of a stone rolled away from an empty tomb, are visual symbols associated with this religious celebration.

Secularly, many view Easter as a celebration of Spring and renewal, with symbols of eggs promising new life, and rabbits and flowers which reappear each year in Spring. Hiding and finding candy and eggs is a fun family tradition for many.
